What Is the Italian Digital Nomad Visa?
The Italian Digital Nomad Visa is designed for non-EU/EEA highly skilled professionals who want to live and work legally in Italy while staying employed by a company outside of Italy (or working as a self-employed freelancer for international clients).
Introduced in 2024, the Visa offers a clear pathway for skilled professionals who can work independently of location, allowing you to settle into Italy’s beautiful cities, borghi, or seaside towns.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for the Italian Digital Nomad Visa, you must meet these basic requirements:
Non-EU/EEA Citizen
Work Remotely: Either employed by a foreign company or self-employed with international clients.
Minimum Income: At least €24,789 per year. (€2,066 per month).
Health Insurance: Valid international or Italian private health insurance.
Accomodation: Show proof of lease, a rental agreement or deed in the applicant's name that is valid for the duration of the visa.
Clean Criminal Record: You’ll need a certificate from your country of residence.
Professional Qualifications: Proof of higher education or relevant work experience.
Note: Italy focuses on attracting highly skilled professionals, so you may be asked to show proof of qualifications (at least 6 months of experience in your field) or certifications.
How Long Can You Stay?
The visa is initially valid for one year, with the possibility to renew annually as long as you continue meeting the eligibility criteria.
After five years of continuous residence, you could even apply for long-term EU residency, opening up more opportunities in Italy and beyond.
How to Apply
The process is straightforward but requires some preparation:
Collect the Required Documents – Passport valid for at least 12 months– Proof of remote employment or contracts– Proof of annual income (€24,789 or more)– Health insurance– Criminal record certificate– Proof of accommodation in Italy
Apply at the Italian Consulate or Embassy - Submit your visa application at the Italian consulate in your current country of residence.
Enter Italy and Apply for a Residence Permit - Once you receive your visa and enter Italy, you must apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit) at the local police headquarters (Questura) within 8 days of arrival.
