A set of directions leading to Rome and the seaside in the background

Need to cool off from the Roman sun? Good news: some of Italy’s best coastline is just a train ride away. Whether you're craving soft sand, a sea breeze, or a quick escape from cobblestones and car horns, these day-trip-friendly beaches have you covered (no car or suitcase needed).

Here’s your go-to list for beaches near Rome (from North to South) that are easy to reach by train in summer 2025.

🏖️ Santa Marinella

Just under an hour from the city, Santa Marinella is a go-to for Romans looking to get their feet in the sand fast. The water’s usually calm, and you’ll find both free beach access and lidos if you want to rent a sunbed.

How to get there: From Roma Termini or Roma San Pietro, take a direct regional train (Regionale) to Santa Marinella.

Travel time: about 1 hour from Termini Cost per ticket: €4.60

Pro tip: Arrive early during weekends in peak summer months, it gets packed by midday.

🏖️ Santa Severa

Santa Severa’s claim to fame? A postcard-perfect castle right on the water. The beach itself is wide, quiet, and laid-back. It’s a great choice for couples, families, or anyone looking to mix swimming with some light exploring (Santa Severa Castle).

How to get there: From Roma Termini, take a Regionale train on the Pisa/Grosseto line to Santa Severa Station.

Travel time: approximately 1 hour (then a 15–20 minute walk from the station to the beach and castle). Cost per ticket: €4,10

Pro tip: If you’re planning a chill day with a bit of culture, this beach offers the perfect mix of both.

🏖️Ladispoli

Ladispoli offers dark volcanic sand, a long stretch of beach, and plenty of casual cafés where you can refuel. It’s less touristy than other spots and has great public access if you're bringing your own towel and snacks.

How to get there: Take a Regionale train from Roma Termini to Ladispoli-Cerveteri

Travel time: approximately 40-50 minutes

Cost per ticket: €3

Pro tip: It’s a great place to bring your towel and picnic due to its public beaches. Check out Marina di San Nicola, Spiaggia di Palo and Torre Flavia.

🏖️Ostia Lido

If time’s short, Ostia is your best bet. It’s not Rome’s most beautiful beach, but it’s close and budget-friendly. Expect a lively boardwalk, local beach clubs, and crowds on weekends.

How to get there: Take the Roma-Lido Metromare train. It departs from Piramide Station and reaches Lido Centro

Travel time: about 1 hour

Cost per ticket: integrated with the metro system, €1.50

Pro tip: Head further down to Stella Polare or Castelfusano for more space and a slightly quieter vibe.

🏖️ Anzio

Anzio has long stretches of clean beach, shallow waters perfect for a swim, and plenty of places to grab an aperitivo with a view. It’s also known for its historical sites from WWII. Check out Rivazzurra Beach or Lido La Playa for your spontaneous aperitivo on the beach.

How to get there: From Roma Termini, take a Regionale train to Anzio

Travel time: approximately 1h 10m

Cost per ticket: €3,60

Pro tip: There are plenty of seafood restaurants near the port if you want to turn your beach day into a seaside dinner.

🏖️ Sperlonga

With its whitewashed houses and crystal-clear waters, Sperlonga feels like a dreamy vacation. The old town is charming, the beach is beautiful, and the views are the kind you’ll want to save to your camera roll.

How to get there: Take the train from Roma Termini to Fondi-Sperlonga. From there, catch a local shuttle bus to the Sperlonga beach (approx. 20-25 m). For more information, visit this website.

Travel time: approximately 1h 40m

Cost per ticket: €7

Pro tip: Make time to explore the old town (Borgo Sperlonga and Torre Truglia) or the archaeological museum dedicated to Emperor Tiberius (Villa di Tiberio, and Grotta di Tiberio). Want to go beyond the beach? Pair your beach day with a little adventure by booking this Gaeta boat tour. Explore sea caves, and turquoise waters from the best angle: the deck.

With so many train-friendly options, there’s no excuse not to swap cobblestones for coastlines at least for the day. Be sure to check the Trenitalia website, for updated ticket prices.
